Endoscopy Department

The Hippocrateon Private Hospital operates a specialised, fully-equipped Gastroenterology - Endoscopy Department, covering the entire spectrum of modern Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

The following diagnostic and invasive operations are performed here:

• Diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the upper gastrointestinal tract (esophagus, stomach, duodenum).
• Diagnosis and treatment of small bowel diseases.
• Diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the lower gastrointestinal tract (colon, rectum).
• Diagnosis of esophageal motility disorders with high resolution esophageal manometry (HRM - High Resolution Manometry).
• Diagnosis of gastro-esophageal reflux episodes (24-hour wired pH - 24hr pHmetry).
• Diagnosis of upper and lower gastrointestinal disorders without the use of endoscopes (Capsule Endoscopy).
• Argon Plasma Coagulation (APC) for the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases.
• Respiratory Test - Urea Breath Test for the diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori infection.
• Study and application of new endoscopic techniques for the diagnosis and treatment of both malignant and benign tumor neoplasms.

Specifically, it is the only Endoscopy Department in Cyprus which uses the following methods:

• Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for removing tumor neoplasms from the gastrointestinal tract.
• Peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) for treating a variety of esophageal motility disorders.

The endoscopy department is fully equipped with the latest digital technologies and endoscopy tower systems, which allow real-time collection of digital images and video recordings for all endoscopic procedures, as well as an electrosurgery unit for the use of argon plasma coagulation.

It also has a state-of-the-art anesthesia machine which helps monitor and record the vital signs of the patient (pulse, blood pressure, heart rate) undergoing during any endoscopic procedure.

The department has a 2-bed recovery unit that is constantly monitored by nurses. In addition, there is a special area with a high-quality washer where cleaning and decontamination of endoscopes is undertaken after every use.

All endoscopic procedures are always performed with an anesthesiologist present for sedation and patient monitoring.
